Why the Moving Business is Thriving

You may wonder why the moving business is thriving, even though it’s a proven fact that people aren’t moving the way they have in the past. More than ever, adult children are choosing to remain at home, and older adults are opting to stay in their homes instead of moving into a retirement community or care facility.

So, how does our phone keep ringing?

Today, we’re going to talk about some of the reasons the local moving company is thriving now more than ever even though our society is less mobile than ever before.

Expertise

Whether it’s the giant hutch the homeowner bought from Ikea and assembled himself or grandma’s antique piano, there are some items a homeowner will look at and throw up his hands when it comes to ideas on how to move it. Experts, on the other hand, know how to manage the breakables and keep them intact.

In-house moving

Some people call because they want a roomful of furniture moved to another room or even moved to storage. While the family isn’t relocating, their stuff is, and they want it moved by an expert.

Equipment

A moving company has the equipment necessary to move a plethora of odd items. From dollies to moving straps, moving blankets and boxes with packing material of every type, movers have the goods. Instead of renting or buying the stuff, it’s easier to call a mover who already has the equipment and not have to stumble through figuring out what is required.

Storage

Back in the eighties, Sam Shoen, the founder of U-Haul, decided to get into the storage business, because he could see that moving and storage were siblings. This is still true today, but minus the moving: people are storing their stuff rather than having to move to a bigger home, and then bringing what they need out as it’s required. (We will talk more about this in a future blog.)

Better use of resources

People are more inclined to make use of the skills of others than ever before. In the case of moving companies, customers are happy to let a strong team of movers help them move for less than the cost of a trip to the emergency room in the event they were to get hurt trying to move their own belongings. “It doesn’t make sense for me to move my furniture,” said one. “I already know I have a bad back. Moving my stuff would be a crazy thing to do.”

As we mentioned before, movers know how to move heavy items, and know how to pack things and load for maximum moving efficiency.

Movers are licensed and insured, as well. An accident in a moving truck is not something a homeowner wants on his driving record.
